Design around short, interruptible sessions

Help users understand where they are, what requires attention, and what will happen after an action. Save progress frequently and make it safe to leave. Critical workflows should recover gracefully after the app is closed, a call arrives, or connectivity changes.

Assume the network will fail

Communicate connection state without blocking everything. Cache information that users may need again, queue safe actions for retry, and distinguish between temporary failure and a request that requires correction.

  • Keep essential navigation and saved content available offline where practical.
  • Use optimistic updates only when reversal is clear and safe.
  • Compress media before upload and show meaningful progress.
  • Test on mid-range devices and constrained networks.

Prioritize clarity over density

Small screens require decisions. Give primary actions enough space, reveal complexity progressively, and avoid compressing desktop navigation into an overwhelming mobile layout. Accessibility settings, text scaling, contrast, and touch target size should be tested early.

The best mobile products feel calm because the team planned for imperfect conditions. They preserve context, explain system state, and let users complete important work without unnecessary effort.
